A. — Subst. masc., MÉTALL. ,,Four à cuve à double paroi métallique et à circulation d'eau, utilisé dans la métallurgie du cuivre, du plomb, du nickel`` (Lar. Lang. fr.). Les jackets sont en acier (moulé, soudé ou embouti), parfois même en cuivre. Lorsque, par accident, un de ces jackets est crevé, son remplacement est aisé par suite de la paroi artificielle créée par la matière figée (GUILLET, Techn. métall., 1944, p. 54).
B. — Subst. fém., ODONTOLOGIE. Revêtement d'une couronne dentaire, imitant l'émail, employé comme prothèse esthétique (d'apr. VIGNAUD1973).

Étymol. et Hist. 1. 1928 art dent. couronne Jacket (La Revue de stomatologie, 2/1928, 127 ds HÖFLER Anglic.); 1930 jacket (id., 3/1930, 158, ibid.); 2. 1931 métall. jacket ou water jacket (Lar. 20e). Empr. à l'angl. jacket, nom de vêtement correspondant au fr. jaquette employé pour désigner des objets ou des dispositifs destinés à couvrir, envelopper ou protéger quelque chose, notamment des dispositifs contenant de l'eau pour protéger de la chaleur (water-jacket 1869 ds NED), le terme d'art dent. jacket crown étant attesté dep. 1903 (NED Suppl.2).
